I thrive in a thoughtful, multi-disciplinary environment that tackles major problems such as violence, gendered injustice, and harm to our climate. I have developed the ability to contribute my communication, research, and educational skills in support of new approaches to old problems.Teaching kindergarten made me understand the importance of two things: how valuable care is to society, and the importance of thinking beyond pre-defined gender categories. This set me on my path to improve men’s care of children.To learn about children, fatherhood, men and care, I have worked as a kindergarten teacher, personal counsellor, group facilitator, activist and researcher and most importantly as the father of two children.My time at the Sustainability Institute as a student and friend showed me how important (and how difficult) care for the natural environment is. I also benefited immensely from my Master’s supervision at the Centre for Complexity, and utilising complexity theory grounded my approach to any problem in a humble and critical candour. My qualifications all came home when I began work on improving men’s care of themselves, other people, and the planet, and this inspired my current doctorate.The decade I have worked at Sonke Gender Justice has allowed me to particularly develop my skills in communication, research and policy advocacy.
