I was taught a profound – and timeless – business lesson early in my career by an account manager of an agency vendor. Oftentimes the best lessons are those you aren’t even aware you are learning. Working in the marketing department of a global company, I was naturally on the receiving end of a bombardment of marketing agencies looking for new clients. I ignored them all. Our department already had several companies we worked with. Most did business the same way – their way - and we accepted it as clients. One began to stand out through a different approach to supporting my business. In the process of driving her company to deliver a high-quality product, the account manager made my life easier along the way. She took the time to understand my business. She became my partner to help me navigate the ever-changing environment that is the reality of being a marketer in the technology industry. Solutions not problems. Nimble and precise. On the occasion a snafu arose, she proactively owned it and solved it. No nonsense. As a result of helping me do my job better – and my life easier - my business went to her.20 years later, she is now Sr. Vice President of a Fortune 500 company. No surprise.
