Process Safety Management Lead Engineer, Ehs Engineer/ManagerBic May 2017 - Jun 2020Based In Paris. Part Of Every Heart & Home., FrBroad scope of responsibility included process and compliance work. As lighter plant environment and safety engineer, was in charge of LPG safety and compliance with all aspects of PSM (notably PHAs, Management of Change, Pre-Startup Safety Review) and filed an updated Risk Management Plan to EPA. Also, ran the Environmental Management System maintaining ISO 14001 certification and even did some OSHA general industry compliance work. The scope included some fire protection system support at times and the scope of the role frequently changed because of other staff coming and going. Notably, was the only manager in the environment and safety department for 8 months, but ensured that it was restored to two as needed to meet long-term company goals and trained new EHS Manager. • Designed changes to LPG and ammonia systems to improve process reliability, increase production capacity 10% and enable modernization. Enhanced safety control logic. • Plant PSM compliance lead for 3 years including 5 year Process Hazard Analysis and 10 year maintenance of LPG pressure vessels. • Changed RMP strategy to avoid new risks of non-compliance and streamline effort. • Zero PSM incidents • In 3 years, 2 minor ISO 14001 non-conformities (certification uninterrupted). • Successful RCRA audit by Connecticut • Praised at audit of extra-financial indicators reported per EU securities regulationsBIC is the well-known consumer products manufacturer selling lighters, razors, pens, markers and more. -
Process Design EngineerM+W Group Dec 2012 - Apr 2015Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, DeDesigned semiconductor plant process systems, largely for GlobalFoundries, including all system categories (aqueous, organic and slurry liquids, bulk and specialty gas, wastewater, hazardous waste, ultrapure water, cooling water and vacuum.) Ran fast-paced high-output weekly workgroups with client to achieve great design on aggressive schedule. My team produced P&IDs, layouts (in AutoCAD and Revit), specifications, equipment selections. Subsequently reviewed vendor submittals and construction progress. Was the primary person synthesizing code hazardous occupancy criteria with client material storage inventory requirements. Projects required frequent detailed coordination with the other design disciplines and trading of precious space. • Selected to lead a team of 9 FTE engineers and designers to design systems worth ~$10M for Computer Chip Commercialization Center at SUNY Polytechnic Institute • Central role in turnkey vendor design and install to retrofit additional slurry distribution capacity, communicating requirements amongst 5-6 companies, 3 of which struggled with schedule commitments / adequate staffing. Provided intensive onboarding for construction manager. Led team through design hurdles and presented before large client reviews. • Conducted HAZOP-like safety review of 60% designs for wastewater and waste systems • Repurposed a section of cleanroom without having sub-fab available belowThe division of M+W Group has since become Exyte and is a large global EPC firm primarily for the semiconductor industry and also for solar photovoltaics, pharmaceuticals and consumer products. -
Chemical Process Design Engineer, (Instrumentation Dept.) And Environmental Compliance EngineerFranklin Engineering Group, Inc. Jan 2011 - Sep 2012UsStarted in environmental department and switched to instrumentation and controls department. Did detailed design, instrumentation, process engineering, air pollution testing, hazardous waste compliance. Primarily served the chemical industry. Supported at least 2 PSM related projects and one design project to manufacture organic liquid. • Major contributor to engineering of $3 million expansion of electric car battery manufacturing plant. Specified compatible and reliable equipment, piping, valves, flow transmitters, temperature transmitters etc. Go-to person for design package document control and catching mistakes (saved ~$80K in a few days). • Modeled mass and energy balance to diagnose failing emission controlsDemonstrated client compliance while achieving operational flexibility. Executed Hazardous Waste Combustor Comprehensive Performance Testing required by Maximum Available Control Technology (MACT) standard. Client makes silicones. • Averted effective closure of client plant by state by helping permit onsite hazardous waste treatment at explosives manufacturer • Allowed client to reduce fuel use by obtaining beneficial use determination to allow organic process waste (GRAS but off-spec) to be burned as non-hazardousFranklin Engineering Group is a 30-40 person full service regional engineering firm primarily serving the chemical industry, with national footprints in hazardous waste incineration emission testing and permitting. -
Environmental Compliance Project EngineerIrwin Engineers, Inc. Aug 2004 - Dec 2010UsManaged environmental compliance projects up to $50K each in all media (air, water, hazardous waste, soil) including auditing, permitting, reporting, training, etc. Primary contact for 20 clients. Wrote proposals, delegated work, contracted with subs, provided billing guidance, met scope, schedule and budget. • Designed full installation of $300K low cost wet scrubber to control NO2 and acid. Saved client money by convincing MassDEP several process exhaust streams did not merit treatment. • Drastically reduced penalties by being present at client site during MassDEP audit • Solved problem of monitoring subcontracted process operator performance byimprovising logging system with hardware, VBA and Python where adding parameters tothe SCADA (control and logging) system would have been overkill. • Prepared emergency plans satisfying a variety of regulations • Satisfied regulatory directive yet maintained operational flexibility by writing operation and maintenance manual for wastewater pretreatment system which processed cyanides, acids, bases and metalsIRWIN Engineers is a 10 person firm supporting clients in Massachusetts and New England, doing environmental and safety compliance work for a variety of manufacturers and institutions, as well as soil and groundwater remediation for anyone who owns land. -

(4 months) This division is now part of Evonik. • Created analysis tools automating Aspen to improve distillation control decisions • Ran Aspen models to repurpose idle distillation column and eliminate multi-state rail shipment of intermediate mixture • Modeled relief valve and burst disc release dispersion hazards (toxicity and fire) • Justified product price increases by assembling product quality historyWorked in paint research lab doing statistical experimental design and execution for paint formulation testing and test method validation. (3 months) • Through testing, identified additional variables which needed to be controlled, thereby creating reliable test methods. Provided insights to recovering valid conclusions from prior data.
