Profile bio

About Julie Westfall

I use my combination of journalism and product experience to help news organizations build sustainable businesses by meeting readers' information needs.Currently, I'm a senior product manager at The Philadelphia Inquirer focusing on stories and the tools needed to tell them.Prior to The Inquirer, I led editorial, product and audience strategy at The Compass Experiment, a McClatchy-operated effort to build sustainable local news organizations. I have also built multiple news teams and digital storytelling tools. As a breaking news, and later politics, editor at the Los Angeles Times, I led the development of a live updates format and tool, among other digital storytelling formats, that vastly increased top-of-the-funnel readership and supported other reader engagement metrics. The publishing tools we built enabled reporters and editors to tell those stories more easily and with far less friction via smoother workflows and carefully considered user interfaces.I led a national breaking news team at the local newspaper network Digital First Media and worked to build a breaking news strategy at NPR-affiliate KPCC in Los Angeles. I was also part of the team that launched TBD.com, a regional news startup covering the Washington, D.C. metro area, where I ran daily breaking news coverage and helped build the content management system, one of my first educations in the importance of building great storytelling tools in order to enable great storytelling.I grew up in Florida and I went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I earned a degree in journalism. Right after I earned my degree, I served as a Peace Corps health education volunteer in a small village in Mali.

Listed skills include Breaking News, Copy Editing, News Writing, Newspapers, and 27 others.
