Helping to build an open source database and table format optimized for multi-modal storage.

Initially worked on building an open source C++ single-node compute engine in the Apache Arrow project. Focused on storage layer optimization, asynchronous and parallel I/O and compute, scheduling and thread management. Later duties switched to engineering and community management. Helped to build and promote Substrait as an open source intermediate representation standard for databases.

Working on the Apache Arrow project. Investigating how to best apply parallel programming techniques while loading, parsing, and decoding data from a variety of filesystems (e.g. HDD, SSD, S3). Helping to advance the availability and performance of open source data analytics.

Building a set of abstractions to allow a common data plane for measurement data across the company. The goal is to allow a myriad set of devices and software to be able to publish measurement results while also allowing analysis applications to consume these results and provide insight. As a further challenge these APIs must work in a broad range of deployments, from a simple desktop server to a private cloud to a public cloud such as AWS. This position has involved connecting a diverse collection of development groups and technologies through compromise, collaboration, and cooperation.

Creating a full stack software product to help customers visualize their data. Responsible for the entire project from requirements analysis to design and implementation. Solution requires a high scale Microsoft SQL Server database interface connected to a C# HTTP server running ASP.NET Core which supplies an AngularJS user interface which renders various custom built graphs using the D3 graphing library. Challenges include the efficient processing of large amounts of data as well as devising a clever and intuitive interface for visualizing the data.

Facilitating discussion between marketing and engineering to distill customer business cases into buildable requirements. Working to understand the customer's problems and devise solutions and a product direction which meets their needs. Ultimately responsible and accountable for the technical feasibility and schedule of releases.In addition, training and leading a team of engineers spread across multiple projects. Working with top techincal talent to determine skill gaps and identfiy training to address the gaps. Refining and perfecting a lightweight and common development process bridge which allows individual teams maximum flexibility while ensuring the company can make cross-team decisions effectively.

Providing technical expertise and mentoring for a team working on a Java project. Helping set product direction and road map. Facilitating inter-team communication and process. Started with a project that had significant scale and architectural issues. Provided designs, examples, and benchmarks which turned the project's performance on its head. In addition, worked with the test team to provide new test frameworks and estimation strategies which brought test times down by 30% while increasing coverage.

Developed a Java web application with a SOAP API to enable 3rd party scripting and an in-house Flex GUI. The application's purpose was to configure and control hundreds of servers which in turn communicated with thousands of instruments.
