Autonomous UAVs for Inspecting Agricultural Water Canals Advisor: Kenji Shimada, Founder of Computational Engineering & Robotics Lab, Theodore Ahrens Professor in Engineering Using OpenCV library and python-based algorithm, processed images captured by UAVs so that crack elements can be identified, grouped and connected. Current tasks involve implementing Machine Learning techniques to process canal images.  Optimized the filter algorithm and corresponding threshold parameters, which yielded an average of 85% correspondence between processed images with ground truth. Designed and developed algorithm that grouped adjacent cracks into clusters and connected aligning crack elements to further improve processing accuracies.

Mengfu Education and Technology Co. Developed and designed technological solutions to resolve social/environmental issues. Projects include Autonomous Suitcase, Bio-mechanical Hand, Intelligent Trash Can, Electronic Guard and Autonomous Tennis Collector Used Autocad and Fusion 360 to design the mechanical structure and manufacture using laser cutter and various machining tools. Used Arduino, OpenMV and various sensors to implement control and program motion of the projects.

Mathematica Controls ToolAdvisor: Inna Abaramova, Professor at Department of Mechanical Engineering Developed a Control System Design Tool powered by Mathematica Packages and Functions, which enables users to not only customize their own control systems from scratch but also to interact with multiple plots to achieve their desired system models  As head of the Mathematica Group, I developed Mathematica Packages featuring plotting data, transforming data structures and configuring control systems. Weekly meetings are held by me to maintain constant communication with Graphical User Interface group so that maximum compatibility between subgroups can be achieved, namely, results are updated when user click is captured. Improved computing power and usability on existing alternative – Matlab Single-Input-Single-Output tool (SISO Tool). My Mathematica Controls Tool have 20% more computing capability than Matlab SISO tool and have a more refined UI design providing better user experience.

Swiss Roll CombustorAdvisor: Paul Ronney, Professor at Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Experimented on the spiral heat exchangers featuring self-sustained and heat-recirculated combustion in either ultra-lean or ultra-rich conditions that are beyond normal flammability limits. Designed and Manufactured multiple components structures of Swiss Roll Combustors, including intake/exhaust, metal foils and thermal fins. Moreover, I renovated current version of the experimental setup to include a quick release mechanism, a safer wiring option and a jack platform which securely held Swiss Roll Combustor in place. Updated the experiment interface programmed using LabView to include multiple temperature channels integrated in the new design. Worked closely with CFD subgroup to analyze theoretical fluid model with experimental results in order to optimize Swiss Roll design. Solved the critical problem of insufficient heat transfer between channel wall by adding fin-shaped structure and the modification increased the heat transfer rate by 21%, which allows leaner fuel mixture to be combusted and larger portion of heat flow to be recirculated.

FSAE Racing Team Advisor: Yann Staelens, Professor at Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Built a college standard F1 racecar from ground up and participated in the annual Formula SAE West competition in Lincoln, NE; the racecar was highly evaluated by FSAE Competition Committee. Designed aerodynamic parts using Solidworks and Simulate their repective aero efficiencies with CFD. I worked with other team members to collectively manufactured aerodynamically-efficient body parts using carbon fibre composite material and foam mold. One of my contributions include redesigning and repositioning the side-pod of the racecar so that air-cooling efficiency of the engine can be optimized. With my undivided effort, the 2018 race car fought on to be the second car to finish the 22 km endurance race and placed 12th overall in the competition, which is an unprecedented achievement throughout team history.
