I used to be a programmer. Loved it. But I realized I was better at whiteboarding than coding. So I became a product manager. Then I got really lucky and did some early-stage investing. I'm still not completely sure how that happened. I think I oddly have poker to thank for it. Sadly, no matter what I do in my career, I'll probably always best be known for eating a 100x100 at In-n-out.

Chief Product OfficerLanded May 2022 - Nov 2022San Francisco, Ca, UsI'm full of gratitude to join a fiercely passionate, smart and purpose-driven team leading PM + Design + Ops. Founded in 2015, Landed upholds those who uphold us: our educators, healthcare workers, government employees, and first responders. In many cities, high prices make it difficult for these individuals to become the long-term residents our communities depend on. If we want stronger schools and safer communities, we need to support those who make it possible.Landed was born in the San Francisco Bay area, where we created our shared equity down payment program. Since then, we’ve expanded to help home buyers across the country navigate all of their different options to buy a home and build financial security, helping keep these critical community members on the front lines. -

General PartnerVtf Capital Feb 2012 - Jan 2018Las Vegas, Nv, UsDuring my time at Zappos, CEO Tony started Downtown Project (DTP) as a "side project". It was a $350 mm mission to re-invent Downtown Las Vegas (DTLV). Out of DTP spun out VegasTechFund a tech fund to grow the DTLV ecosystem. In the early days, we were 100% focused on growing the DTLV tech ecosystem. After a few years of focusing on Vegas, we pivoted to become VTF Capital. We doubled down on the type of investments we were pretty good at making. Commerce ones! Not a surprise for a bunch of Zappos folks. VTF is a fund that invests in the "Future of Commerce". We focus on direct-to-consumer brands or commerce infrastructure. -
Director Zappos LabsZappos Family Of Companies Nov 2010 - Dec 2016Las Vegas, Nevada, UsHello dream job! After doing some consulting with Zappos, I was lucky to have an opportunity to start and open a @ZapposLabs office up in SF. It was my chance to join a brand and team I absolutely love locally (Zappos HQ is Vegas). We went through a lot of pivots of “What is @ZapposLabs”.I led the team in a product, strategy and dishwasher role. Our small team of developers, product, project, ux and design nerds initial focus was that sexy, glittery intersection of mobile, social, content and commerce. The team created industry-first mobile and social shopping products. We evolved to tackle a few different areas including a “magic checkout” physical shopping experience at BayToBreakers, Open Market (an Uber like tool for call center staffing), new lines of business (Zappos Air anyone?) and various internal tools to support Zappos journey to self-organization. I also played a role on the Zappos executive team to continue to foster a culture of radical transparency throughout the org.<3 to all my friends at Zappos past and present. You guys and gals are the best. -
Product And Technology ConsultingIndependent Consultant Jan 2008 - Nov 2010If you've never been a freelance consultant, I recommend giving it a whirl. I have a real passion for technology and product management and I love helping people build their products.I did a ton of Yodlee consulting during this stretch (with around a dozen+ companies). Integrating with Yodlee is/was a pain in the ass.I also had the privilege of doing some Product Management with Zappos.com. I helped them launch a public (sadly, no longer public) API platform and community as well as supporting various mobile initiatives and their VIP program.

Sr. Technology ConsultantPacwest Consulting Partners Feb 2008 - Sep 2009After Yodlee, I was fortunate to join my good friend's boutique consulting company Pacwest. At Pacwest, I specialized in working with clients to improve and streamline their existing business processes. We had a pretty interesting model where we would have one person teams who would work with client teams and account manage, project and product manage, code and support new solutions. It was pretty fun and fast-paced to show our bigger traditional clients how quickly things could actually be built.

Sr. Director Of Product Management - PaymentsEnvestnet | Yodlee May 2004 - Feb 2008Berwyn, Pennsylvania, UsI had been a user of Yodlee's account aggregation since 2000. It was a great next step for me as I was looking to join a company vs. agency.I started at Yodlee as a Sr. Technology Consultant on the professional services team. I would work with big financial institutions (Bank of America, Scottrade, American Express) as well as startups (Mint.com pre-launch) integrating with Yodlee's APIs and platform. My career evolved to Director of Engineering where I led a 50+ engineering team building Yodlee's BillPay product. I eventually realized I'm probably a better whiteboarder than coder and I made the full time leap to Product Management. I wrapped up my Yodlee career as a Sr. Director of Product Management Payments with a product management team spanning Bangalore and the Bay Area. -
ArchitectSapient Sep 1999 - May 2004Boston, Ma, UsMy first gig out of college! Looking back 17+ years later, I still think this was a great decision. An amazing agency like Sapient taught me the value of process, client focused delivery, cross functional teams, core values/company culture and hustling your ass off. It was a wild ride! I was on quite a few death march 100 hr a week projects, survived 4-5 layoffs and the travel got really intense. But I'll forever be grateful to the great folks at Sapient for giving me a phenomenal foundation I built the rest of my career on.I started as an Engineer (programming Java EJBs....that was bleeding edge shit in 1999). I learned the technology corporate ladder and became a Sr. Engineer and then an Architect. My first project as an architect, I feel like I single handedly created the conditions for the largest money losing project in my business unit that year. Yikes. Lesson learned! It was pretty unforgettable to be in San Francisco in 1999 helping build these crazy startups (first project: ChemConnect - eBay for industrial chemicals!) and being an “Architect for the new economy”. Thanks SAPE! -
DeveloperEnsemble Systems May 1998 - Aug 1998My last internship! Developed software with the great team at Ensemble Systems building software engineering tools.
-
DeveloperMacdonald Dettwiler & Assoc. Jun 1997 - Dec 1997My 2nd internship! I was a programmer at MDA and we wrote software to process satellite imagery. I helped write a program that could detect tank track movement when comparing two different pictures. That was awesome.
-
DeveloperNortel Networks Jan 1996 - Aug 1996My first programming job! I did an internship with Bell Northern research which became Nortel (RIP).I got to live away from home for the first time, coded web pages in PERL optimized for Netscape 3.0. This was a golden age.

Dishwasher -> Busboy -> Waiter -> HostO'Donals Family Restaurant 1990 - 1995My first real, not under the table job!O'Donals was like IHOP. But Irish themed. And not as fun or yummy. But I learned the corporate ladder here. Dishwasher to busboy to waiter to host. Climb that ladder! In all seriousness, working in a restaurant is great for a teenager. I learned a lot about hard, dirty, honest work, how to talk with customers in a friendly way, and I felt like a millionaire if I came home with $20 in tips as a busboy.

Video Store ClerkHastings Video 1990 - 1995My family used to run an independent video store. We rented VHS tapes with a few Betamax. It probably looked weird to customers that a 15-year-old kid was working in a video store by himself. Made 10x more awkward when they are renting porno from me. Seriously. So awkward. Well...our family had to eat.

Door To Door Flower SaleskidDude In A Station Wagon 1988 - 1990This was such a weird job in hindsight. I sold flowers door to door. A guy in a station wagon would pick us up and have a bucket of flowers for each kid. We worked on commission. If I sold a bouquet (they cost $3) I would earn $1. If I sold 20, I got a $5 bonus. Seriously...my parents let me get into a random guys station wagon as a 12 year old and walk door to door and sell flowers.Oddly, I learned a lot about how to talk to people on this job.

PaperboyFlyer Force 1986 - 1986My first job! I was a paperboy. How original. But I only delivered flyers. Literally, I was that kid that gave people trash they didn't want. I got fired after 1 or 2 months. They did not appreciate that many of the flyers ended up in the woods or recycling bins. Lesson learned.
