About William Fraser

I am currently the Technical Services and Development Manager for graphic arts within Europe for Arkema. In January 2024 I completed my PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield. My research aimed to enhance reflection photoelastic analysis techniques for industrial structural health monitoring. This consisted of formulating functional coatings using UV curable materials.I hold a First-Class Master of Physics degree from the University of York and gained experience in innovative technology development during my year in industry at the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

    • Main AchievementsA good understanding of reflection photoelastic analysis for strain measurements using commercially available automated photoelastic acquisition and processing apparatus. A strong understanding of UV resin curing processes and techniques to cast onto a variety of substrates using manual and spray coating techniques. Frequent use of various techniques such as Digital Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to explore degree of cure of thermoset coatings; Design of Experiment (DOE) statistical packages for rational coating optimisation; and statistical analysis procedures to analyse large quantities of experimental data. Confidence with CAD packages to design custom components to assist in my research. I also oversaw the manufacture processes of these components. An ability to perform experiments using techniques with limited external and published research.Able to effectively present large quantities of experimental findings in a concise and professional manner to fit certain publishing criteria.

    • Main Individual Project: I was investigating coherent combination of free space femtosecond laser pulses. An innovative technique which could be used within the next generation of high intensity lasers. With no available documented research to reflect upon, experimental testing often led to challenging and unexpected outcomes. Problem solving was required to achieve a desired result. • Additional Responsibilities: Assisting in the setup of laser shots for experimental users. Required accurate problem solving and effective communication when problems occurred. Designing and following up on the manufacture of custom parts such as complex lens mounts or precise fittings. I also designed accurate representations of new beamlines to be used within the Vulcan Laser. I used Autodesk Inventor to carry out my sketches. All tasks placed me in a rewarding position of responsibility

University Of York Jun 2016 - Sep 2016
    • Radiation detector technologies: Funded by Kromek, I optimised and developed high performance sensor materials based on Nal crystals. My role was to gather and analyse data from various gamma sources using PMTS and SiPMsThis gave me the experience of handling radioactive sources safely and utilising ROOT software. I used ROOT to analyse and correct my data; and to display and discuss my results through spreadsheets and reports.
