Design and reverse engineering of replacement parts for emergency diesels; Managed flow accelerated corrosion program; Resolved changes with Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel for company; Anticipated the need to research the effects of the change in diesel fuel formulation and led the 3 Duke stations and associated emergency diesel owners groups in resolving the change in diesel fuel properties. He also developed testing to show the lubricity value of the biocide that we use, saving our and many other utilities from significant costs associated with testing each batch of fuel for lubricity. The ESI-EMD Owners Group presented him a plaque recognizing his "outstanding contributions over the last 17 years in the area of the EDG fuel and lube oil issues."Resolved issues with diesel injector pump failures by selecting appropriate filters and designing new filter housings.Reverse engineered and wrote procurement specification and manufacturing drawing for link shaft cam for emergency diesels.

Supported Design Review / Quality Revalidation for DeLaval emergency generator sets; Lubricant commercial grade dedication; Selection and qualification of lubricants for safety related systems.Significant Technical Contributions. Replaced steam generator (S/G) manway bolts with studs that included datum rods to allow indication of actual stud load and calibrated hydraulic stud tensioners to assure sufficient stud preload. Wrote S/G stud procurement specifications that included features to reduce the likelihood of inter-granular stress corrosion cracking. This innovation was transferred from the original S/G's to the design for the replacement S/G's.Drafted procurement specifications to allow purchase of all Duke Nuclear reactor vessel head O-rings from the manufacturer rather than through subvendors. Reviewed steam generator nozzle dam designs for safety features and installation efficiency and wrote the necessary procurement specs. Worked extensively with lubricants and lubrication issues and represented the nuclear generation department in the 1995, companywide, lubricant commodity consolidation effort. The nuclear department's needs took precedence over the other company groups because of the need to maintain sources for nuclear environment qualified lubricants. Garnered financial support of Enterprise and EMD owners groups and developed research protocols to choose the optimal engine oil for nuclear stand-by service and reduced piston deposit formation. At the Winter 2007 Enterprise Owners Group meeting, the Cooper-Cameron field engineer recognized the success of this oil choice and recommended that members begin using it.
