Web Designer/Developer -- Product Marketing Designer

Greater Nashville Area, Tn

I joined Edgenet in November, 2018, as a Web Designer/Product Marketing Designer. Two months later, Edgenet was acquired and rebranded as Syndigo - a much larger company (six companies came together to make up the new one), offering a similar, but far more robust Saas product that helps suppliers and retailers share accurate and complete product data. At Syndigo I decipher design requests, first understanding the problem to be addressed, the users that will benefit, and the requirements of the stakeholders. This ensures that the end result will provide value, before I ever draw a line or select a color.Below is a summary of my work at Syndigo:- I create and build landing pages -- constructing site/page information architecture, prototyping designs with wireframes and mockups, and building the pages in Wordpress, often adding custom html, css, and svg code.- I create infographics and slide decks, constructing the narrative of the content, to support consistent, accurate internal and external communication, brand awareness, product education, and sales/marketing initiatives.- I created Syndigo's Visual Brand Style Guide, documenting and explaining the company's new colors, typography, logo guidelines, clear space guidelines, iconography, and other graphic elements. This promoted consistency in the wake of rebranding madness, and made employees' lives easier as they worked to rebrand legacy company documents.- I rebranded/redesigned legacy marketing collateral (one-sheeters, landing pages, infographics, etc.) to align with the new company styles and language.- I provide product support by participating in brainstorming sessions with our product designer, and occasionally helping create mocks during the ideation process.

Ux Design Student

Greater Nashville Area, Tn

At Nashville Software School, I completed a three-month course in which I learned and practiced user-centered design principles and processes. Students were tasked with researching and designing a person-to-person payment app, or digital wallet for fictional company, Rhino Splits. Treating Rhino Spits as a real client, I researched their goals, defined the challenge, researched competitors and interviewed users. I used journey maps, user personas, and card sorting to analyze my findings and define my design, then created a sitemap, wireframes, and an interactive, hi-fidelity prototype of the app, conducting usability tests as much as possible throughout the process.I documented the project's goals, my research, analysis, design process, and final prototype in a Case Study, available at www.whitneymitchell.com/rhino-splits-case-study. While I thought I knew a bit about UX design work prior to completing this course, going through the full design process -- documenting my work as I went, creating client-ready deliverables, and actually conducting (rather than just thinking/reading about) usability tests and user interviews -- was extremely valuable. The class prepared me to help real clients solve real problems by means of empathetic and conscientious design.

Feb 2018 - May 2018

Front End Software Developer

Franklin, Tennessee

At Cicayda I worked closely with a small development team designing, building, and editing features to support a cloud-based web application for legal professionals. Writing in Clojure and Clojurescript (and HTML/CSS), I honed my ability to design and implement features within the constraints of an existing system, and learned how to choose appropriate UI patterns, elements, etc.In my time at Cicayda -- a small company that didn't have the resources to devote to a full-time UX role -- the development team recognized areas where we could improve our methodology and adopted some UX practices to ensure the efficient release of features our users really needed. This allowed me the opportunity to connect with our primary users, to explore and understand their frustrations, and build solutions that fully addressed their challenges. This research and design work was the most rewarding part of my job, and the inspiration for my career shift to user experience design.

Nov 2016 - Feb 2018

Apprentice Software Developer

Nashville, Tn

Nashville Software School is an immersive, 6 month, full-stack web development program that has equipped me with the skills to hit the ground running as a junior developer. In the first half of the program I studied front-end development technologies. The curriculum focused on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (along with Bootstrap, jQuery, AngularJS, and more). I used them to build a variety of apps, individually and as groups. The second half of the program, which I am currently completing, focuses on the back-end. I am learning to use Python, Django, and SQL, again through project completion both independently and in groups. By the end of the program I will also have built several APIs, as well as an app using my own API, with a Python back-end and an AngularJS front-end.As a whole, NSS's curriculum is focused on Object-Oriented Programming, and Test-Driven Development. This means that in addition to learning how to use all of these amazing languages and technologies, the material has been framed within a context of looking towards the future, keeping my code maintainable, and establishing an efficient version control workflow. When classes started I was an absolute beginner, but due to the immensely valuable knowledge and skills I've gained at NSS, I am now a competent, eager, and enthusiastic web developer.

Apr 2016 - Sep 2016

Pizza Cook

Portland, Oregon Area

At Hot Lips, a busy locally-focused, artisan pizza restaurant, I worked as a part of a team, creating made to order pizzas, managing large orders, cleaning and maintaining the kitchen daily, anticipating product shortages, and maintaining fun, positive customer service. I also helped train coworkers to use a new POS when we changed systems.

Sep 2011 - May 2015

Shift Supervisor, Barista

Murfreesboro, Tn, And Portland, Or

At Starbucks I provided quality customer service by meeting complex drink orders, maintaining a stocked, clean bar, and building (often lasting) relationships with customers. I also operated the point of sale while communicating orders to fellow baristas and connecting with customers. I experienced the implementation of two new POS systems in my five years with Starbucks, and helped coworkers learn to use each new system. Additionally, I trained several new employees in their first days with the company. Starbucks was a task driven environment where attention to detail and communication were crucial. As a supervisor I was also responsible for daily bookkeeping, directing staff-members in their duties, and communicating clearly with the management team regarding any and all things store related, including product shortages, staff-scheduling/conduct issues, customer issues/complaints/suggestions. I worked in three different stores as a regular employee, and covered shifts at multiple other locations when needed.
