About Whitney Pipkin

As a staff writer for the Chesapeake Bay Journal, I cover how people interact with their local environment across the multi-state watershed. I've written about the return of dolphins and the water quality conundrums posed by coal ash and microplastics. My freelance work has appeared nationally in The Washington Post, NPR, National Geographic, Smithsonian Magazine and Civil Eats and in regional publications such as Virginia Living, Northern Virginia and Arlington magazines and the Delmarva Farmer. I have served as guest editor for Edible DC’s fall 2018 and summer 2016 issues. In recent years, I've devoted my extra bandwidth to writing a book about the loss of my mother. We Shall All Be Changed: How Facing Death with Loved Ones Transforms Us was released by Moody Publishers in early 2024 and is now available anywhere books are sold.See some of my recent journalism work at whitneypipkin.com and follow the book at whitneykpipkin.com.

Whitney Pipkin Work Experience Details
  • Bay Journal
    Staff Writer
Bay Journal May 2013 - Present
As a staff writer for the Chesapeake Bay Journal and BayJournal.com, I cover Virginia, DC & Anacostia topics as they relate to the Bay and, often, as they intersect with agriculture or societal issues. I've followed the legal battles over natural gas pipelines to the Supreme Court, covered coal ash controversies and plastics legislation across the region. But covering the people and animals of the watershed — especially dolphins and mussels — is what keeps me interested. My work for the Bay Journal earned Environmental and General Reporting awards from the Virginia Press Association and Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association.
  • Washington, Dc
    Freelance Journalist
    Washington, Dc Apr 2012 - Mar 2021
    Washington D.C. Metro Area
Specialized in stories about food, agriculture and the environment as a freelance journalist. My work has appeared nationally in The Washington Post, National Geographic, NPR, Smithsonian Magazine and Civil Eats and in regional publications like Virginia Living, Northern Virginia and Arlington magazines. Earned an award for our team’s coverage of a deadly refinery blast, the fallout of which I covered for nearly two years.

Worked with a cohesive team to maintain coverage of local beats.
