In the spring of 2009, I led a team of copy editors in the production of the annual campus newspaper publication. A team of student writers, editors, photographers, and designers came together to create the next edition of the award-winning publication Mosaic at the University of Oregon. My duties included supervising the copy editors during meetings, researching style guides in the region, making executive style decisions, and assisting my co-workers in developing well-planned and intriguing stories about the economic crisis.
During winter break, I wrote two stories for this magazine and single-handedly copy edited the December issue. One of my stories covered a Christmas song that was written by a Portland band to raise awareness for children being treated at Shriners Hospitals. The other covered a name change of a Portland café and reviewed the atmosphere of the restaurant's new image.
At this culturally focused magazine, I wrote a feature story covering the sterile needle exchange program in Eugene. These nationwide programs provide intravenous drug users with clean syringes so as to prevent the spread of disease in the community.
During this internship, I primarily performed office work, which included completing Excel spreadsheets, making phone calls, and delivering fliers. I also assisted at two major events, one of which was held by Nike, based; The other was a local representation of the semi-annual, nationwide event called CRAVE, which showcases local boutiques and promotes environmentally friendly business practices. My services were used throughout the planning process for this event, allowing me to gain experience in all aspects of event management.
