About Paul Rice
I retired as Senior Partner, Compliance Officer, Anti-Money-Laundering Officer and Head of Agriculture of a 300+employee legal services firm based in the West Midlands in 2020 and have relocated with my wife to West Cornwall (her family's home for the last 400+ years!)I was director and secretary of the Warwickshire Rural Hub CIC as well as having held the posts of County Chairman for both the NFU and CLA. I also represented the rural sector on the SME group of the CWLEP.I used to advise farmers, rural business owners, equestrian property owners and landowners whether it was buying or selling a farm or leasing it in or out. I also advised on all aspects of domestic and European legislation as it impacts on farming and rural businesses. As a specialist in how the regulatory framework in which the Common Agricultural Policy is administered, I lectured widely on the subject of SPS/BPS and other agriculturally-related topics. I also advised on the detailed workings of the BPS, SPS, HLS/ELS and their relationship with routine farming practices and' given my background as an advocate, I have represented, on an individual basis, those members of the rural community who have happened to find themselves at odds with the authorities. For 20 years I worked in the public sector (army, CPS and Intervention Board/Rural Payments Agency and having worked for the last 15 years in the private sector I am, exploring how best to spend the next 15+ years and I am well placed to utilise the experience that I have to help relevant sectors in West Cornwall particularly as I understand the psyche of both public and private sectors and hopefully help bridge what, at times, appears to be aa huge chasm.Have spent the last 20+ years working on the regulatory side of agriculture, specialising in the Common Agricultural Policy, I am reading up on the Common Fisheries Policy and trying to understand (along with the rest of the sector) how it will be effected by the B word. I have already noticed many similarities with the farming sector, the main one being uncertainty.......I have a passion for rural businesses, the environment (both land and marine-based) and combined with the knowledge that I have, bring a virtually unique viewpoint to issues that impact in this and related sectors.Having endured lockdown and recently completed the building of our house, I am now actively looking for role(s) that will utilise the skills that I obtained over 36 years as a solicitor in the public and private sectors and hopefully replenish funds depleted by the escalation of building costs.
