My research group investigates molecular pathways related to tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease and Frontotemporal dementia. For several years we have been studying the accumulation and aggregation of tau that occur early in the pathogenesis of these diseases. The major focus of the lab is on investigation of the (dysfunction of the) neuron's own protective and degenerative responses to the resulting disturbance of proteostasis. We study the Unfolded Protein Response and Autophagy-Lysosomal Pathway in the context of emerging tau pathology. Observations from human post-mortem brain tissue form the basis for our mechanistic studies, for which we have developed multiple primary rodent and human iPSC-derived neuronal and neuron/glia co-culture. Our ultimate goal is to identify molecular pathways that can be employed for early diagnostics and therapeutic intervention.https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1431-4559
