With three kids, the pandemic was a challenge. We used agile work methods to align our household as a self-organizing team. With kids managing their day 👇When the pandemic hit, my three kids (1, 4, and 7 years old) couldn’t attend school.The first week of homeschooling, next to remote working, was brutal 😫. So on the weekend, my wife and I sat down.How are we going to survive both family and business workloads?We came up with two things:1️⃣ Family is priority 1. Always. Period.2️⃣ Can we use the agile methods to structure our home team? Creating structure and freedom for the kids while lowering pressure on us?The next day we started.Step one was visualizing the tasks to be done on an average day. So eating, schoolwork, outside play time, board game time, everything that was part of the standard flow got a post-it note.(Of course, we made drawings instead of written notes)After explaining the process of moving the post-its from “TO DO”, to “DOING”, to “DONE” the kids were set to go.And they did.We were amazed 🤯.No talk about what to do next, no discussions on tasks.Every morning during breakfast, we would talk about the tasks for the day. 👉 Is there something new or extra we need to do (and we have to add to the board)?👉 Is there something that happened yesterday that we should change today?The simple fact that they felt in charge of their day gave them much comfort.It was beyond our imagination.And, of course, nothing goes without a struggle. The kids would almost fight about who could move a post-it. So they got extra post-its, simply for the fun of moving them 🟧🟨🟩🟦.Our kids went from needing guidance all day to being a self-organizing team in a few weeks. A team that reflected on their work process and implemented improvements daily.We are fortunate that they return to school again, but the learnings and simple fun from this period will stay with them and us as a family forever!
