My dissertation, entitled "The Victorian Posthuman: Monstrous Bodies in Science and Literature, 1816-2016," argues that the development of the natural sciences in Victorian England lead to a redefinition of the human. Nineteenth-century literature, in its representation of humans as animalized, humanized, and even mechanical, redefines the human as a multi-species entity--what I call the Victorian posthuman. My primary scholarly specialty is the natural sciences in Victorian literature, and the way in which nineteenth-century fiction offers varied and sometimes conflicting interpretations of the developing sciences. My secondary specialty is the history of science fiction, especially SF that investigates mechanical and genetically modified humanoids.
