About Wilfred Walsh

I am a multi-disciplinary scientist, business owner and university educator with over 20 years' international research, business management and tertiary teaching experience. I have initiated new business and research projects and delivered successful outcomes by building high-performance teams through careful coaching and mentoring. Since 2006 I have worked on large scale projects in renewable energy, sustainability and biodiversity. Most recently (since 2007) I have specialised in the design, finance and operation of large scale solar power projects.My astrophysics career at CSIRO in Australia, the Max Planck Institute in Germany and Harvard University in the USA resulted in a winterover scientist position at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and a physics professorship at UNSW Asia. At the National University of Singapore (2011-2018) I established the department of Solar Potential and Energy Meteorology and developed renewable energy forecasting for the Singapore electricity grid. In 2007 I founded Biosphere Capital in Singapore, a consultancy active in renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, national level sustainability capacity building and project finance. In 2021 I re-launched Biosphere Capital Limited in New Zealand as a solar energy project developer with an additional focus on ecology, biodiversity and the planning of large scale forestation projects.     SERIS conducts research and development for sustainable energy based on solar resources. SERIS collaborates closely with industry: use-inspired basic research is done in joint undertakings with research groups from companies, universities and research institutes.My principal roles at SERIS were to develop capacity in the fields of solar irradiance studies and renewable energy forecasting. I built up a team of researchers and students and guided their research through major research grants, achieving international recognition in the new discipline of Energy Meteorology. The group built a network of meteorological stations and developed world class forecasting tools. This research relied on high time and space resolution models of the atmosphere. For short timescales, spatio-temporal statistics were used, while for longer timescales, full physical models of the atmosphere were generated using numerical weather prediction codes. Machine learning algorithms were used to combine forecasts on different spatial and temporal scales, and to make inferences from multidimensional datasets.

    My research focused on Antarctic astrophysics and detector development, for which I have an Australian Antarctic Division grant, two PhD students, and a congressional medal. One project looks at how radiative transfer occurs in ISM clouds leading to collapse, while another involves building new high-frequency radio/infrared detectors to exploit the remarkable characteristics of the polar atmosphere, which I also studied directly. The physics and computational techniques I use are generally applied to modeling of atmospheres and oceans by climate change scientists.
