Phd Graduate StudentAix-Marseille University Oct 2014 - Dec 2017Marseille Cedex 07, Paca, FrAward: Top 12 over 117 PhD thesis funded by DGAThesis: "Innovative focal plane design for high resolution imaging and Earth observation: Freeform optics and curved sensors"Fundings: DGA + Aix-Marseille University The need of high performance in terms of image quality, high resolution and wide field of view increases the complexity and the volume/mass budget of imaging systems. Such constraints concern a wide range of applications: astronomical instruments, space satellites, planetary rovers, defense and surveillance, biomedical imaging, camera objectives, smartphones, drones... To overcome these issues, I had considered two technologies: freeforms optics and curved sensors.1 - Design of space telescopes with freeform optics:• Objective: Improve the spatial resolution while reducing the focal plane dimensions of future telescopes for LEO satellites. • Work:I designed and optimized two optical telescopes. They use an image segmentation system with freeform mirrors based on the image slicer technology developed for integral field spectrometer. This segmentation module allows a reduction by a factor 17 of the focal plane dimensions.2 - Design, prototyping and characterization of curved sensor-based optical systems: • Objective: Quantify the gain offered by curved sensors from narrow to very wide field optical systems.Realize a pre-industrial prototype and do its characterization. • Work:I have performed several comparative studies from astronomical to wide-field optical systems. Results show a significant simplification of any optical systems while improving the performance. I have led the prototyping and characterization of two wide field cameras using the very first visible full-frame CMOS curved sensors. -
