At the age of 14, I told my parents that by 21 I’d leave England and be travelling the world. I’m not sure why I knew that at that age. Perhaps it was the stories my parents told me of their travels, living in the deserts of California or the postcard villages of Hawaii and Fiji. Or maybe it was because I didn’t really enjoy doing my paper round in the cold and rain.I spent my 22nd birthday in the holy town of Hampi, India about a 15 hour bus ride from the nearest large town.I never came home.Upon arriving in Australia in 2010, my background in design, photography and creative thinking helped me secure a role working with one of Australia’s largest retirement companies and it was there I won the Rising Generation Award for innovation and leadership for people under 30. They told me after the interview that they’d just met the future CEO of a retirement company. I was flattered but frankly, I thought they were crazy. I didn’t know how businesses worked. I didn’t understand finances, raising capital, forecasting, hiring. I’d never really managed a team at that point.Looking back, I realise that what I did well was ask good questions, get to the bottom of problems quickly and clearly articulate a solution that solved the problem to a very high standard. Plus, my enthusiasm would draw others in and before I knew it I’d have assembled all the right people to help me get the job done and we’d have a lot of fun doing it.A couple of years chasing another passion as a wedding photographer in 2015 brought me to where I am now. I discovered that the customer journey through the wedding process is fragmented, stressful and complicated. The majority of my couples were overwhelmed and would look to me to help / assist / recommend options for things that had nothing to do with photography. They were desperate for a better experience and I was keen to take on the challenge.Now, as the CEO and cofounder of Nudo (voted top 20 wedding companies by Australia’s No1 Wedding Magazine), I’m on a mission to fill the gaps in my knowledge, improve as a leader and create meaningful change in the wedding industry with the best damn group of humans I could wish for.Current hobbies include fine woodworking, sustainability, animal welfare and building bicycles. Not necessarily in that order.I enjoy meeting new people, hearing new perspectives and being challenged on how things can be better.
