I am a PhD Candidate at the University of Minnesota School of Social Work. I currently work with Dr. Patricia Shannon helping to develop and evaluate tools and training for providers who work with refugee communities. My research agenda is focused on effective adaptation and tailoring of services and supports for communities and individuals affected by displacement and psychological trauma. I first became interested in differential pathways for groups that had experienced shared adversity while completing my undergraduate capstone, which explored maternal mental health, family conflict, and sibling interactions as influential factors for children’s expressions of mental health difficulties in the Research on Adolescent Depression (RAD) lab. I then joined the Crick Social Development Lab at the Institute of Child Development on a project examining peer influences and social development among war-exposed adolescents in Northern Uganda. My work on this project highlighted the significance of cultural meaning making, social expectations, and relationships in influencing post-traumatic outcomes and resilience among communities with shared experiences of atrocity. Motivated by what I had learned about the role of community in promoting resilience, I joined the Human Capital Research Collaborative to help scale up the multi-state implementation of Child-Parent Center programming in public schools. My work on the project became increasingly focused on identifying opportunities to involve families in the creation of programming. After attaining my MSW, I worked at a public health clinic as an outpatient therapist. Because of my past experience, many of my clients were from refugee backgrounds, which allowed me to see first-hand the gaps in care integration and adapted/acceptable care options for refugee families. I also worked with clients who were navigating T and U visa processes, which clarified several areas of opportunity for integrating medical, mental health, social, and legal services to provide trauma-informed care for survivors of these crimes. These and related gaps in system coordination motivated my current doctoral pursuits and inform my focus on humanitarian immigration and resettlement systems, culturally acceptable implementation of evidence-based treatments, and opportunities to improve systems’ recognition and promotion of newcomers’ evident resilience.
