I joined as a data fellow when APM Reports was founded in 2015 and became a full-time staff shortly after. As an investigative data reporter for APM Reports, I used government records and datasets to tell stories about accountability and justice. I specialized in using public records to build unique databases to tell powerful stories about institutions failing to uphold their promises. I worked on both seasons of In The Dark, a two-time Peabody award winning podcast with over 45 million downloads. For season 1, I investigated the clearance rates of a small sheriff's department to show decades of the departments' failure to solve major cases. For season 2, I built one of the largest datasets on jury selection in the country in order to investigate the jury selection practices of a district attorney in Mississippi. Season 2 was about Curtis Flowers, a man tried six times for the same crime, and Doug Evans, the prosecutor trying to put Curtis on death row. I gathered jury selection data covering Evans' entire tenure as district attorney and found that over nearly three decades, Evans removed black jurors at four and a half times the rate he removed white jurors. My work was cited at the Supreme Court and Curtis' conviction was thrown out. In more recent years, I have done investigative collaborations with local public radio stations around the country. I helped KUER and the Salt Lake Tribune investigate the troubled teen industry in Utah, which became the podcast Sent Away. While at KPCC, I worked with the data desk on on-going data projects on subjects ranging from government oversight to arts education. I worked in Python and MySQL to gather and analyze data, and used in-house tools to produce graphics for publication. I also contributed to an award-winning project on police shootings in Los Angeles.

While at In These Times, I was primarily responsible for researching and fact-checking articles for In These Times and InTheseTimes.com. I also participated in submissions meetings, produced articles for the In These Times labor blog, produced stories for InTheseTimes.com, including html formatting and photo research, and assisted the web editor in content promotion, social media and traffic-tracking duties.
