By day, I contribute to making computers more intelligent. (Alternatively: "less dumb".)Relative to peers in computer science I stand apart for my mathematical abilities; I know graduate level discrete math, i.e.: graphs, combinatorics, algebras, sets, logics, and calculi. (Of course I also know the full gamut of bachelor's mathematics expected of any engineer.) I have a small claim to fame in that I've solved the hardest case of a particular class of planar graph coloring problems, thereby earning a sometimes envied statistic among academics.Relative to peers in mathematics I stand apart for computational knowledge. My concentration is in Automated Planning, a subdiscipline of Artificial Intelligence. That means I know quite a bit about applying combinatorial search (RWTA*, LPA*, IDA*, ...), domain-independent heuristics (Planning Graphs, Causal Graphs, Pattern Databases, ...), and local inference (EBL, Conflict-Directed Backtracking, Clause Learning, Landmarks, ...) to solve problems. (At a more basic level, I am competent with C, C++, Java, Pascal, Prolog, Lisp, and Scheme.) My largest claim to fame here is calling attention to a gaping hole in the theory underlying many temporal planners; many include an "optimization" that makes them, essentially, no more expressive than, and thus worse than, classical planners.Larger coding projects that I've worked on include a game-visualizer (OpenGL/C++), an NLP-based game-controller (Prolog), a temporal replanner (JavaCC/Java), a probabilistic replanner (Bison/Flex/C++/BDDs), a Pascal->C compiler (Yacc/Lex/C++), an ANML->PDDL translator (ANTLR/Java), a checkers game (Swing/Java), a definition-based clausifier of FOPL (Scheme), two versions of efficiently grounding relational action theories (MySQL/C, Java), and glue code for data migration and report generation (Access/Excel/VB).Like anyone else worth getting to know, I enjoy myriad hobbies in my free time.
