Matt Foley told me that I wouldn't amount to jack squat, and that I'd be "living in a van down by the river." I've never been one for motivational speakers.I'm a long way from Chris Farley's character; I'm 24, I've never been divorced, and I'm beginning my career as a geologist. I earned a Bachelor of Science from UW-Madison in December of 2019, graduating one semester early. I loved being able to take diverse, challenging courses as a student. My favorites were always the graduate level courses - I grew to like the project-oriented structure, and the homework was focused on thinking as opposed to memorization. For me, these courses were groundwater flow modeling, crystal chemistry, and paleoceanography. I took a broad survey of geoscience courses, but I am most interested in a career surrounding climate studies and hydrogeology. Beyond college, I completed a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA in Billings, MT. The work was fulfilling, and I have an intimate understanding of what it means to work in the nonprofit sector. It was a continuation of my favorite parts of college; I needed to be able to think creatively, adapt to new information readily, and be willing to fill in roles as necessary. Beyond the work, I loved living in Montana. Having access to so much hiking and rock climbing let me pack my weekends full in a way I never thought to growing up in Wisconsin. I have spent cumulative weeks in Yellowstone National Park and the Beartooth Mountains. Being outdoors is integral to my character, and I continue to backpack and camp in my spare time. I actually like backpacking enough that I completed a long distance thru-hike of the Pacific Northwest Trail. It is the Pacific CREST Trail's angrier, shorter brother. It was two months of wildfires, roach motels, and dehydrated food. I want to work for an organization that understands the value of an outdoor pursuit like a thru-hike. It taught me adaptability, determination, and the joy of tap water that I don't have to filter. By Matt Foley's metric, I'm a smash-hit success.
