Whilst on site I undertook the role of assistant site manager on a number of refurbishment projects. I was responsible for all record keeping and quality assurance, guaranteeing that all daily undertakings and personnel on site were accounted for, which enabled me to develop my interpersonal skills.I was able to follow the translation of design through to completed structure and witness the unforeseen problems that can arise during this process. Problem solving was a skill that I was able to develop when aiding the site manager to overcome these problems effectively, and ensure similar issues were avoided on other projects. I also spent time within the design office, where I was able to transfer the skills and knowledge gained on site to take an active role during site visits and when developing feasibility studies.Through developing risk assessments, environmental assessments as well as task briefings and work package plans, I was able to plan for potential issues, ensuring that costs were reduced and programmes achieved.I put to use academic theory whilst undertaking calculation checks and within preliminary calculations for a replacement footbridge. In addition I researched relevant codes of practice to ensure that a compliant tender was put forward.Being involved within the procurement process of a project gave me a greater insight into how a business operates and the importance of ensuring that all legal documents were present and correct.
