About Will Fried
While I most definitely view myself as a data scientist, I am equally an engineer at heart. What this means is that I see data science primarily as a means to an end -- a framework that provides statistical and computational tools to solve problems and make principled decisions given imperfect information.That’s why I try not to get caught up in the hype about using the fanciest statistical methods or the most sophisticated inference algorithms. Instead, my focus is on developing an approach that best solves the problem at hand, where oftentimes the simpler the methodology the better. It’s also why when I notice a problem or area in need of improvement, I have been perfectly willing to take the initiative and offer data-informed recommendations on matters as disparate as pricing strategy, call center operations, and antitrust law.
