Summer Intern
Westlake, Ohio, United States
This was a 3 month, summer internship where I was tasked with improving the factory production floor through the process of 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain). I help to organize and improve all of the machinists' work cell and inventory parts. I also learn important skills like running a laser engraver, creating programs for Mazak CNC machines, and implementing automated robot arms into the machining process.Overtime my focus shifted, and my biggest contribution became my work on the inventory of parts in the factory. We had a factory-wide inventory day for the majority of parts, where workers counted and recorded parts located in the assembly area. However, after that day, one other worker and I worked to further innovate the inventory system by creating scannable part labels, scannable location tags, and working to limit overflow locations and overall organization. We were also tasked with the inventory of the entire shipping area and ensuring that parts were in the correct locations and quantities were of the correct amount. At times it was needed for us to create new locations for parts and improve existing inventory locations. We were able to clear space, optimize organization and part locations, and provide accurate counts for parts that in turn saved the factory money. I now know the inventory of the factory better than almost anyone there, and have been invited to continue working here in the winter. I look forward to the opportunities that it will provide.
