After teaching high-school Latin for seven years, I decided it was time for a change. I enrolled in the Front-End Web Developer program at Midlands Technical College, taking evening classes in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more, while still working as a teacher during the day. After earning the certificate in front-end development, I taught myself PHP and MySQL from a book, learning how to create dynamic websites that use PHP scripts to store and retrieve users' data from a database. My background in classical languages has made the transition to web development easier. Both Latin and coding use a complex but logical system of semantic symbols to encode meaning. In Latin, changing one letter can affect the meaning of a sentence dramatically, just as in coding, putting a comma before a quotation mark or forgetting to close a parenthesis can throw of an entire program.I am currently looking for my first job in web development and would love to talk to you about opportunities to work for your organization.
