About Will Mackay
The majority of my graduate research has been focused on the application of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes in the synthesis of complex carbocycles. The manifestation of this work began with the (3+2)-annulation of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes and ynamides to generate cyclopentene sulfonamides. These compounds could be easily transformed into 2,3-disubstituted cyclopentanones, which share structural characteristics of prostaglandins. From there, I began to investigate the dearomatization of inexpensive aromatic compounds to generate norcaradienes, and the subsequent functionalization of those intermediates, yielding highly substituted [2.2.2]-bicyclic derivatives. Although the initial dearomatization step was challenging to yield regioisomerically pure material, the different regioisomers could be separated by kinetic resolution. Current work is devoted to the generation of regioisomerically pure norcaradienes, which represents the first regioselective intermolecular Buchner reaction.
