About Will Paz

For as long as I can remember, mathematics and baseball have a special place in my heart. After graduating from Hoover High School in '22, I landed at Miami University to study both mathematics and data analytics to prepare myself for my dream career as a sports analyst for a professional baseball organization or to prepare to pursue a career in academia. Recently, I have been accepted into the graduate program for a Master of Science in Mathematics. I have experience in the baseball industry serving as a student manager for Miami University Baseball, and receiving a promotion to Head Student Manager and Director of Analytics after the 2023-24 season. I also have worked three different jobs with the AA affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians acting as a Stringer, Field Timing Coordinator, and Finance Intern. In regards to research, I participated in Summer@ICERM sponsored by the NSF and ran through Brown University. I also have participated in various mathematical independent research at Miami University. I have received multiple awards and honors from my work, such as the J. Paul and John P. Albert Scholarship and a grant from Miami University's Center for Career Exploration and Success. I will be presenting with my ICERM group at various mathematical conferences and are in the submission process to get our work published in the Math and Sports journal. I am looking for further research opportunities or relevant baseball analytic internships for the upcoming summer.

Head Student Manager & Director Of Analytics

As the Head Student Manager, the first thing I do is to oversee all things having to do with student involvement. I am charged with building a network of managers and analysts who help the coaching staff as well as myself with various duties, such as practice operation, player operations, equipment facilitation, and more. I interview possible candidates to find qualified candidates to join our tight-knit team of managers and analysts. I assign duties to various individuals as I act as a liaison from the coaching staff to my team, acting as middle management of sorts. Beyond the management duties, I also help assists with data collection, practice facilitation, practice planning, ball-tracking system operations, scouting, and maintaining our video databases. I also co-run all of the Miami Baseball social media pages, coordinating content, photography, and more.As the Director of Analytics, I am charged with creating post-game Trackman reports for pitchers, batters, and catchers. Some examples of reports include a pitch-profile reports, situational execution reports for both pitchers and hitters, swing decision reports, framing reports, and batted ball summaries. Beyond that, I created a Shiny dashboard for the pitching staff that includes a wholistic view of performance metrics, pitch design data visualizations, batted ball result tables and metrics, batted ball spray charts, usage and velocity over time graphs, and more. Using these reports, I make conclusions to relay to the coaching staff in order to make the most informed decisions whether that is for scouting, player development, recruiting, or anything else they may desire. With this role, I also oversee the student analysts who assist me in data collection, data cleaning, and data visualizations.

Analyzing video from practices and games and editing such to the needs of the coaching staff. Utilizing software such as R or Python to create models and visualizations based on our own data or NCAA data to improve either player or team performance.

As a part of the Research Experience for Undergraduate program at Brown University, titled: Summer@ICERM 2024: Mathematical Models to Predict, Prepare, and Prevent, I collaborated within a small group to apply linear algebraic and other mathematical models to make predictive models for the field of sports analytics. We also create ticketing reports, game day reports, merchandise reports, bank account management, organize the fiscal information using Excel, and construct financial analysis reports that reflect the performance of the organization. Other responsibilities include managing the payroll, Human Resources, and more related duties. On game days, our responsibilities include collecting cash from promotions, 50/50, Plinko, etc, as well as monitor the use of the cash card machine. Post-game, we input the financial data from the previous game into Sage to allow us to organize our finances and perform our accounting work.
