First introduced to the waters of Sydney Harbour at 2 days old, it took Will a while to start racing sailboats, however since his first time crewing in an old wooden Sabot on the waters of Lake Macquarie - he has never looked back. Progressing quickly through a range of junior classes including State and National Championships, Will turned his focus as a helmsman to the sailing discipline of Match Racing, Yachts and 18 foot Skiffs. In the same month he finished his schooling, Will was the youngest competitor in the 2006 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Since 2009, Will has focused purely upon the 470 class, and has firmly set an Olympic medal within his sights.Under the guidance of 'Medal Maker Coach' Victor Kovalenko, Will earned a top 8 World ranking as he trained as a sparring partner in the 4 years up to the London Games to eventual Olympic Gold Medalists Mat Belcher and Mal Page. Following the 2012 London 2012 Olympics, Mat Belcher and Will Ryan teamed up to campaign towards Rio 2016. The pair had immediate success winning all events they competed in together and remained undefeated in 2013.The team was subsequently awarded Australian Sailors of the Year; and Australian Institute of Sport - Team of the Year.Will has numerous other State and Australian Championship titles in a range of sailing classes including being a 3-time Australian open match racing champion, a World medalist in the 29er Class, and Canada’s Cup Champion in 2011. Since completing his schooling in Sydney, Will has also managed to combine his sailing with a Bachelor in Commerce (Accounting & Finance) from The University of Sydney.
