It’s been a long, nonlinear life, so bear with me.I earned a BA in philosophy from Northeastern University in Boston in 1969. I was News Editor for the school paper and worked alternate semesters for two years in New York as a copyboy and a clerk in the newsroom of the New York Times (1965–1967).After graduation, I knocked around odd journalism jobs, including four years (1977-1981) freelancing for the Real Paper in Cambridge, Mass. At one of said odd jobs, I learned how to use an early typesetting computer there, using this skill to augment my writing income.I wrote for national magazines with some success but not enough to live on. In 1985, inspired by a lifelong love of classic film, I moved to LA to try scriptwriting (1985-1991), while typesetting to live. I had some brushes with success in those six years but ultimately sold nothing. Then the Mac desktop revolution came in, and I segued from typesetting into freelance graphic arts. This semi-creative outlet saved my sanity, and the money was fairly good. I did it for the next 25 years.I retired in 2016 and began researching an historical incident in which two US companies convinced Washington to destroy a tiny Central American port in 1854. I wrote a scholarly journal piece on the subject in 2017 and an op-ed on it in 2018. My non-fiction book about the event was published in 2023, followed by a YouTube video summary of the book.
