This large-scale clinical trial was designed “to establish the effect of early detection by screening on ovarian cancer mortality”. It aims to provide evidence justifying a national screening programme for ovarian cancer in the UK. Two tests were used in the UKCTOCS trial: CA-125 blood test and Transvaginal Sonography (TVS). UKCTOCS performed annual TVS examinations on 48,250 post-menopausal women between July 2001 and December 2011 - a total of 300,027 scans. I was responsible for creating an archive for the 1.4 million grey-scale static images from these examinations. My research involved creating an image processing system capable of analysing large batches of images from the archive and so automate the collection of quality control (QC) metrics. It is anticipated that the availability of reliable, objective and independent QC metrics will drive a Quality Improvement programme for TVS resulting in more women with ovarian cancer having their disease detected at first scan.
