The placement at McAuliffe has gone so well that I will continue to work as an Assistant Civil Engineer part time whilst completing my final year at university. During my time at McAuliffe, I have gained experience carrying out topographical and as built surveys using a variety of equipment. This includes using a Topcon Hybrid Robotic System which combines the use of GPS satellite positioning and a Total Station, this allows me to accurately survey an area using either satellite positioning alone, using a more traditional total station to survey, or a mixture of both. I also have a working knowledge of AutoCAD and I am able to read technical drawings and use the information to build site models for use in volumetric appraisals. As McAuliffe are the largest user of GPS Machine Control in the UK, I have gained a lot of experience in creating models of sites. These are used on the machine control to guide the machine drivers, much like a sat nav in a car, but with the addition of a Z axis. Models must correspond to the client’s site specifications, so they have to be very accurate. To build these models I use digital terrain modelling software called n4ce and 3D Office, which is software provided by Topcon for their systems. Show less
