Kelp Movement is a Documentary Film and Impact Campaign to catalyze today’s momentum in the kelp industry into a movement for the future produced by my company, Firestarter Interactive. Regenerative ocean farming—vertical underwater aquaculture with a mix of seaweeds (kelp) and shellfish—has been identified as a key solution to climate change, with its powerhouse abilities to sequester carbon, rebuild marine ecosystems, and supply a zero-input sustainable food source (not to mention: fertilizer, animal feed, base for bioplastics, biofuels, and many other compelling uses), while at the same time supporting growth of a new workforce and giving fishermen who have run out of fish working the oceans new opportunity as blue economy farmers.At Firestarter Interactive, a production company based in the Ocean State, we have become passionate about this ocean-based climate solution, and are on a mission to make kelp mainstream. We believe in the power of film and storytelling to raise awareness and build momentum at a crucial moment for kelp and its high-growth potential. As Bren Smith, the founder of GreenWave, likes to envision, “kelp is the new soy,” i.e. with the potential to be used in and for everything, with none of the negative repercussions, only positive ecological benefits.Our planet is in a crisis, and regenerative ocean farming moves beyond sustainability and preservation of the status quo to the necessary horizon of regenerative solutions, actually improving the planet—pulling carbon from the atmosphere and cleaning polluted waters—as it’s implemented. We feel an urgency to educate and inspire about the great potential of regenerative ocean farming, particularly kelp, and promising work already underway. We endeavor to catalyze this proactive climate solution through leveraging the power of film and storytelling at a time when our planet (and the people who inhabit it) need it the most.
