VTL are a developer of thermal management hardware, including bespoke extruded aluminium heatsinks and open-celled micro-porous metals. During my tenure as Technical Director, I lead the development of the patented Lost Carbonate Sintering (LCS) process to provide metallic foams with highly desirable properties in pilot volume.

Head-hunted to lead a unique product development programme, my goal was to rapidly transfer an academic technology from a one-off lab scale process to a proof-of-concept volume-manufacturing route, developing significant and valuable know-how throughout.

Responsible for all technology aspects of a critical £5M pa business unit. Remit included materials and structures research, product development strategy, management accountancy, manufacturing and quality assurance. With my input, CTG achieved certification to the stringent TS16949 quality standard, alongside maintaining pre-existing ISO9001:2000 and AS9100 accreditation.

Working as the primary Project Engineer in the Magnet Suspension Systems team, reporting to the Engineering Director and managing one development engineer I was responsible for designing, developing and manufacturing a wide range of unidirectional fibre-reinforced composite products for use in cryogenic applications.

Operating as dedicated engineering and materials science support for a patented light-alloy surface engineering process licensed by CTG, I worked with the process owner to develop and commercialize this plasma-electrolytic deposition process in the UK motorsport, industrial and aerospace sectors.

Employed as a paid internship to research and write a technical document on the existing and emerging technologies for the surface treatment of magnesium and it's alloys, with particular focus on plasma electrolytic processes such as Keronite.

Engaged in fundamental measurement research in the field of smart materials and systems, as one member of the “Sensors & Functional Materials Group” – a part of the eminent NPL Materials Centre. Main roles included primary experimental design and evaluation, first-tier data collection and analysis, technical report writing and project planning.
