I completed my Honours degree in 2015. I am currently doing my Masters in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pretoria, investigating innovative ways of condition monitoring of bearings used in the support idlers of conveyor belts like those found in the mining and the power generation industry. Artificial Intelligence is used to monitor and classify the health of the bearings along the length of the conveyor. Instead of having an accelerometer to monitor each set of idlers, I am looking at monitoring the entire conveyor with a single accelerometer. The data acquisition equipment usually used in our laboratories are too big for this setup and the small compact solutions are very expensive so I built my own data logger with an over-the-counter microcontroller and sensor for a very small fraction of the price.Small scale tests show promise and tests on the test bench are still being done to investigate the feasibility of the new monitoring technique.
