Willem Els is a Senior Training Coordinator on terrorism and explosives related incidents at the Transnational Threats and International Crimes Programme at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Pretoria, South Africa since March 2012. His work focusses on terrorism as an international phenomenon, with specific emphasis on Africa. Part of his focus is on the enhancement of bomb disposal and investigation training and mentoring of police bomb disposal units in Africa. Willem has traveled broadly throughout Africa where he delivered specialized training on various aspects of the threat of terrorism, extremism, radicalisation, bomb disposal and investigations, chemical, biological and radiological countermeasures and counter-terrorism to law enforcement and criminal justice officials in a number of countries on the continent.Prior to his current position at the ISS, he served in the South African Police Service (SAPS) for 28 years. He worked on counter terrorism related matters since 1985. He worked as close protector to various cabinet ministers. He also served as a sky marshal for several years. Willem was trained as a bomb technician while working as a sky marshal and joined the intelligence service of the South African Police. He focused on bomb disposal and investigations. He served as the training manager of the Explosives Section of the South African Police Service for several years. His main focus was explosives, chemical, biological and radiological countermeasures. Willem holds a Bachelors of Arts degree (BA Policing Practice) and a BA (Hons) (Policing Practice) from the Southern Business School.
