Remotely

YPMH use evidence-based strategies for innovation to improve the prevention and treatment of depression in children and young people. People from multiple disciplines and backgrounds, as well as professionals in innovation management come together for workshops presenting information on topics around the prevention and care of depression in young people. This leads to brainstorming and then prioritising of ideas for early diagnosis of risk factors for depression, monitoring, and treatment. These include what young people and their parents or carers can do, but also what schools, voluntary societies and Governments can do to prevent and treat the huge burden of disease caused by depression.Workshops have included gut-microbiome-brain axis, genes and epigenetics, inflammation, tryptophan and kynurenine pathways, HPA axis and glucocorticoid resistance, and diet, exercise and sleep. These were followed by five innovation workshops, and a seminar to put it all together. Further workshops will follow.

Co-Founder

We are an international collaborative of researchers and educators interested in all aspects of Vitamin B12. Including the virtually unexplored realm of vitamin B12 lookalikes [aka. analogues]. We have weekly meetings on Zoom where we share knowledge across a wide variety of scientific backgrounds, from biochemistry to the biology of algae (yes, they need vitamin B12 too), genetics and clinical issues. In just two years, from the start in early 2020 till end of 2021, we have grown to a membership of around 100, mostly scientists involved in B12 research from India to the Middle East, and the Americas to Europe. Members have collaborated on several funding applications for research and are working on further collaborations.

Communication Skills Tutor

Workshops with fourth year medical students. We teach them skills and offer them the opportunity to experience for themselves, to take a comprehensive history, to talk with patients about bad news, sex and sexuality, to handle angry and aggressive patients, to work with translators and with patients from a wide variety of backgrounds, and to give and receive feedback. We work with a group of fantastic professional actors who roleplay a good variety of patients and give feedback to the students about how their communication and manner were perceived. Observing the interactions between students and actors is always interesting. Especially seeing how one word or question can often help the patient open up about what they have experienced. Seeing students grow in their communication skills is super rewardig.

Gp Appraiser

All doctors in the UK have an annual appraisal with a colleague. Appraisals were designed to review the doctor's practice, CPD [continuing professional development], quality improvement in the practice, feedback patients and colleagues, serious incidents and complaints, as well as the doctor's wellbeing and self-care. The doctor's annual appraisals contribute to their 5-yearly relicencing [known as revalidation]. I am very impressed by the huge amount of hard work and commitment to patients that I see in my colleagues, under circumstances that have got tougher and more stressful year on year. Appraisals are a source of learning for myself too, seeing the wide variety of CPD my colleagues do and the experiences they report.

Out-Of-Hours Gp

Oxfordshire, Uk

General Practice care of patients with the full range of clinical conditions in the Out-of-Hours period [evenings and weekends]. This includes telephone triage, seeing patients in clinic and home visits, as well as working with hospitals, paramedics, district nurses and palliative care to optimise the care for all patients.

Gp/ Family Physician

Self-Employed

I have worked across a wide variety of settings, from city to rural practices, a practice for homeless and vulnerably housed people, as well as out-of-hours care. I enjoy contact with patients and their parents or carers, from the newborn to the old and very old, from people with minor illness to those with complex medical problems and mental illness. I aim to optimise the care for each individual patient, taking into account both short-term and longer-term issues and options.
