Since my studies in Amsterdam in the ’80s, I have worked as a photojournalist, freelancing for various newspapers and -agencies. I was promoted to Picture Editor in Chief of the Dutch daily newspaper Het Parool in 1999. And a year later, I started writing financial-economic columns. I quit the newspaper in 2001 to become a live Amsterdam stock market commentator for RTL Z.But how did I end up being an investor? It started in the 90s when I acquired several apartments in Amsterdam to rent them out to expats. This is common nowadays, but back then, I was amazed at how easy it was to get bank loans. It made me start a personal inquiry into the monetary system's history and nature.After the tech bubble burst in 2000, which I predicted a year prior in my column, I decided to swap my real estate for precious metal investments. I centered my investments around successful Canadian exploration companies making new precious metal discoveries. I started AmsterdamGold, a webshop for gold, silver, and platinum, which was sold in 2011 after a yearly revenue of $100mln. And in 2008, I also founded Commodity Discovery Fund. Headquartered in Aerdenhout, we analyze significant drilling programs worldwide and invest in the most successful exploration companies. The fund grew rapidly to 160 million euros in assets under management, and an annual (gross) return of more than 70% has been achieved several times. More than 75 companies we invested in have subsequently been acquired by larger mining companies.Between 2007 and 2018, I published seven books on monetary and geopolitical issues, including the Dutch book If the Dollar Collapses and the English book The Big Reset, about the imminent reform of the global monetary system. In 2016 the London-based monetary think tank OMFIF asked me to become a member of their Advisory Board.The international success of The Big Reset made me a sought-after speaker appearing as a guest speaker in dozens of countries on all continents (including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Kazakhstan, China, Australia, Dubai, South Africa, Peru, USA, Canada, and Hong Kong). I also performed with Tony Robbins and gave guest lectures at universities in the Netherlands and China.Also an experienced startup/scaleup investor since my role as a founding shareholder at Startup Bootcamp Amsterdam I enjoy my role as a monetary and geopolitical commentator.
