One time, I received a fortune cookie saying “Don’t ignore the minor details; they are the keys to your success.”Another time, I got one saying “You will buy new clothes soon.”Based on this large sample size (n=2), I live life according to my fortunes.I’ve found sometimes the tiny details within a journey contain the most meaning. Three experiences stand out.Around American University (AU), I’m known as “the Subway Guy” for my Subway restaurant Instagram account, @asubwayseriesofpics. As freshmen, a friend and I decided to visit and document every single Washington, D.C. Subway on Instagram. Since then, we’ve sold stickers, held events and made it into our school newspaper twice. This is an audacious and ridiculous endeavor, but it taught me one thing about myself: if I’m going to do something, I’m going to give it my all.In summer 2019, I worked in a diverse position with American University’s Discover the World of Communication (DWC). DWC is a pre-college program where students take classes during the day at AU and explore Washington, DC at night. I served as a program assistant, where I led activities and supervised residents and ran the program’s social media. This position provided a better sense of who I am as a leader and team member. When you work in a team setting, there’s a ripple effect. Every little detail matters.Currently, I work for BluShark Digital as a digital marketing intern. Here, I implement SEO/SEM strategies and tactics, interview clients and update website content. In this role, I understand how important tiny details can be for a client and user alike. Something as simple as broken code or a 404 error can ruin a website experience. Each day, I apply my meticulous attention to detail and learn more about SEO/SEM in the process. While my experience has shaped the professional I am today and aspire to become, there is so much more to me. My favorite words are audacious, poise, grit and precision. I enjoy embarking on projects no one else even considers — check out the PR plan I wrote for the rats. That’s only the tip of the iceberg.Through it all, I want to add skills and grow. PR has the potential to inspire others. I want others to realize their growth and dreams as I do the same. That’s what I believe I’m here to do, both as a man and budding professional.Any task, no matter how small or insignificant, can be done sloppily or with nobility. Every job I take on reflects who I am and want to become. Thus, I focus on the small details. And yes, I also buy new clothes from time to time.
