About Will Mason

I build amazing things…I am a leader & engineer with an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for elegant problem solving. I began building computers at age 7 and developing websites by 13. Since then I have worked hard for an internet startup that was then acquired and also founded two companies (a web development firm and a social community startup, vibe.me).In the earlier parts of my career, I spent 8+ years learning the details of the ever changing world of web development, from building frameworks & architecting release systems to following & creating standards compliant trends for my team of developers. I have built everything from brochure websites with custom CMS's to full blown highly scalable distributed web applications & social networks. For the last 11+ years, I helped build Twilio from a ~60 person startup to a 7,000 person publicly traded company. With over 20 years of experience in the industry, I still love the world of technology, automation, and creating amazing things. While I still love hands-on building, I believe one of my true skills is in seeing the bigger picture and architecting large systems. Now, I’m ready to take the next step on this journey as well as mentor others in this field I love.

  • Vibe.Me
    Cto / Co-Founder
    Vibe.Me Aug 2010 - Nov 2011
Responsible for technical vision and execution from servers, databases, development framework, and a RESTful API to front-end programming, mark-up, and style implementation. I took a new approach to web apps for development by turning vibe.me into a JavaScript app (all markup templates loaded on landing) with data and business logic accessed via the API. This approach not only improved the "perceived" speed of the site but also paved the way for mobile apps, an open API, and 3rd party development. The forward facing site is served using dbdMVC (PHP Web Framework) & dbdMVC.js (JS Web Framework) while the API is provided via dbdMVC which is backed by MySQL for a data store and secured using OAuth.Taking a lean & agile approach, I implemented and evolved a continuous deployment system and built tools to tighten the customer feedback loop. Sometimes deploying to production 20+ times in a day.Built the Vibelight: an Arduino controlled LED sign to hang in our office which blinks, chirps, and displays stats about the vibe.me community and the latest repository commits. Just plug in an ethernet cable and it fetches all its data from the API.
  • Don'T Blink Design
    Cto / Founder
    Don'T Blink Design Dec 2006 - Nov 2011
In addition to leading a team of developers & guiding designers, I was responsible for creating our entire development process. With strict personal standards for high quality output, I championed standards compliant design as well as built the development framework everyone used for our projects. Server & database administration as well as release management were all part of my duties.Successfully completed & delivered 30+ Client Websites/Apps from concept to completion. I helped translate from Photoshop mock-up to production-ready solutions using best practices (HTML/CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, etc), cutting edge techniques (dbdMVC, dbdMVC.js, AJAX, etc), and the best tools...all while constantly evolving our process, frameworks, internal tools, and knowledge of tech startups.Since our first project, I built a PHP Framework (dbdMVC) to enable rapid prototyping and remove some of the less-than-fun aspects of building websites. dbdMVC handles all requests, creates search engine friendly urls (routes), manages assets (HTML templates, CSS, JS, and images), and creates a database abstraction layer to lessen the amount of SQL written for querying the DB. Recently I created dbdMVC.js (a JavaScript port) to build a new breed of web applications.

I also wired the entire office and maintained workstations for 30+ employees.I lead many project meetings with corporate and grew into a larger team consisting of fellow developers, QA Analysts, Project Managers, Producers, & consumers.
  • Cars.Com
    Programmer/Network Admin
    Cars.Com Mar 2003 - Jul 2004
    Chicago, Illinois, Us
Responsible for webmastering the three consumer facing sites. Eventually transitioned into building internal tools and managing the servers & local network. I built the sales, reporting, and management tools for the direct to dealer lead delivery. This is where I fell in love with PHP & MySQL.
