After years of education in multiple subjects at many levels and with a variety of class sizes, I have developed a wide scope of skills in math education.My greatest challenge so far has been the creation of a high school graph theory course for students who have already passed the AP Calculus BC exam and wanted an additional challenge before moving on to college. Some of my students hungered for rigorous pure math investigations and others wanted to learn how graph theory is used in the real world. Still more attended for their love of problem solving and their joyful curiosity. Over the course of a year, I learned how to adapt my curriculum to their needs, reach each student where they were, and hopefully inspire some to go on and embrace a love of mathematical thinking.Coaching high school and middle school basketball for two years exposed me to how hurtful it is to students when they are told to sit down and be quiet in class and how important it is to give children an opportunity to be loud and learn through movement. This lesson motivated me to teach probability through the lens of sports analytics and vector calculus through the lens of a the motion of a free throw.As a fifth grade Latin teacher, I learned that though some students may not be strongly motivated to learn about a particular subject matter, those same students may be strongly motivated to learn simply for the love of discovering something new and the feeling of accomplishing something they thought was impossible.Ultimately, my goal is to spread that love of discovery to as many learners as I can find.
