Founder/CeoClear2Play Oct 2020 - Jul 2022Dedicated to deploying technology to make youth and amateur sports better, safer, and more enriching, Clear2Play was a mobile and web app that automated all forms of compliance (SafeSport, background checks, concussion, COVID, etc.) for organizations and event coordinators. Used by Olympic venues, World Championship events, and National Teams, as well as every level of sports organization, Clear2 helped mitigate risk and elevate the user experience by easily collecting real-time participant data in a convenient mobile application, reporting via a simple graphical interface with timely alerts, and archiving all interactions in a secure cloud environment for reliable, time-stamped documentation. -
Founder/CeoGreat Coach, Inc. Feb 2018 - Oct 2020With the goal of eradicating athlete abuse in youth sports, we developed the Great Coach application to create greater transparency and accountability in amateur sports. Partnering with the US Center for Safesport and the leading background check companies as well as several large and exemplary sports organizations (The Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation was the best), we created reliable guardrails to celebrate great coaches, elevate mediocre ones, and get dangerous coaches away from our kids. This was a very ambitious endeavor and, as much of the youth sports world was eager to avoid any discussion of this challenge, it was much more difficult than anyone would've expected. In response to the COVID pandemic, the app and company were re-branded to Clear2Play in 2020.

-
ProducerCbs News - 48 Hours Jan 2012 - Mar 2014I produced a one-hour prime-time CBS 48 Hours episode, entitled Father and Son, about the mystery surrounding Uta Von Schwedler's murder in 2011. It was the top-ranked, non-sports, primetime show in the nation on the night it aired.

Writer/Producer/DirectorEdge Of Never Productions Jan 2007 - Feb 2010I wrote, produced and directed The Edge of Never, a documentary feature film based on the book I wrote of the same title. The film was a finalist at the Banff Film Festival and the Whistler Film Festival. It was an official selection at the Telluride Mountain Film Festival. We sold the film to Showtime Networks, where it played for two years. I consider this film/book project a love letter to the ad hoc family of skiers with whom I've spent a lifetime on snowy peaks.
-
AuthorEdge Of Never Jan 2007 - Jan 2009I wrote the book The Edge of Never, a nonfiction account of a 15-year-old kid who journeys to Chamonix, France, to attempt to ski the route that killed his famous extreme skiing father. The book was nominated for Adventure Book of the Year by the American Independent Publisher's Association and was a finalist for Book of the Year at the Banff Book Festival. I also directed a Showtime movie based on the book.
-
Founder, President, Publisher, Editor In ChiefWasatch Journal Media Feb 2007 - Aug 2008I created this company, the Wasatch Journal magazine, the web solution, and the custom publications division. From pure start-up stage – where I wrote stories, edited, sold the ads, and generally did anything that needed to be done – I built a team, brought the company to profitability, and then sold it to First Tracks Media.
-
President/CooHealthright, Inc. Jun 2005 - Sep 2006I was president of this start-up medical informatics company through early planning, fundraising, launch, and product development stages. When our founder and chief scientist, John Morgan, died suddenly, we were unable to continue to raise funds and forced to close the company. The work we did to give patients accessible and understandable information about their own healthcare has, to this day, still not been equaled.
-
Writer, Producer, 2Nd Unit DirectorSony Pictures Entertainment - Steep (Film) Aug 2004 - Dec 2005I created, wrote, fundraised and sold this documentary feature film to ABC anchorman Peter Jennings' company (which morphed into The Documentary Group). After selling the project, I was hired to write, produce, and direct. The resulting film, Steep, was released by Sony Pictures Classics in December 2007.
-
Writer, Producer, DirectorByrning Borders Aug 2003 - Aug 2004I created, fundraised, wrote, produced, and directed this television series pilot built around former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne and his efforts to use technology to help the poorest, most hard-working artisans in some of the world's most dangerous places through his Worldstock platform. We had a hell of an adventure in Beirut, Lebanon, including but not limited to a tense interaction with Hezbollah while filming on a deserted crusader castle overlooking Israel's Golan Heights. After getting everyone home in one piece, I managed all facets of post-production and then spent half a year negotiating with a cable television network executive who made the Hezbollah dudes look like boy scouts. In the end, this series did not find a home.
-
Contributing EditorSkiing Magazine Aug 1987 - May 2004For a decade and a half I wrote ski stories for Skiing magazine. -
Author - Utah UndergroundMountain Sports Media Oct 2000 - Oct 2002After creating and successfully pitching a guidebook to Utah's unexpected side to Time Warner, my wife, Bel, and I spent six months blazing around the state, testing out our new marriage and motorcycle. The trip functioned as my due diligence on the State of Utah. Published immediately preceding the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games, Utah Underground took readers from coffee shops to gay bars and everywhere in between. I wrote it and Bel shot the photos. It was well received and for half a dozen years it enjoyed strong sales. I've heard that the book also had a part in convincing people that Utah was an interesting, vibrant place that confounds expectations of a mono-cultural, bland flyover state. It also convinced us to give Utah a go. That choice has worked out well. More than 20 years later, the marriage and the motorcycle continue to motor on, and we've come to call Utah our home. -
President/CooLevel Red Feb 1998 - Oct 2000In the early dot com era, LevelRed was a portal that focused on extreme sports and the electronica dance scene. With full e-commerce, a dating service, live streaming from surf contests, and free email, LevelRed was ahead of its time. I came on after the funds had been raised and the company was in trouble. I cut the burn rate and turned it into an efficient multi-media organization. Prior to the dot com crash, the company went public through a reverse merger (under the parent company's ticker symbol ZAND).

Writer, Producer, Second Unit DirectorViacom - Net Worth (Film) Jan 1997 - Sep 2000I wrote, produced, and was second-unit director for this feature film. Net Worth is a 2000 drama film that stars Todd Field, Craig Sheffer, Daniel Baldwin, Michael T. Weiss. We sold it to Blockbuster Entertainment, which made it a Blockbuster Premier.

Producer - Nagano Olympic Winter GamesCbs News Jan 1998 - Mar 1998New York, UsDue to knowledge of skiing, snowboarding, and ice hockey, I was hired as a "fixer" to work on the Sports/News Desk. During the course of the Olympics I was given a promotion and the chance to work with Bryant Gumbel and Bill Geist to produce my own stories (which aired during prime time). Stories included a humor piece on snowboard halfpipe, the snowboarding/marijuana incident, Jonny Moseley's gold medal in moguls, Picabo Street's gold medal, and Team USA's women's ice hockey team's gold medal. -
Author - The Snowboarder'S Total Guide To LifePenguin Random House Nov 1995 - Dec 1997New York, Ny, UsThere once was a smart editor at Random House who thought that snowboarding was a cultural phenomenon that might be ripe for lampooning. RH had made a yacht-load of money on the Preppy Handbook back in the 1970s and this smart editor thought that snowboard culture was a whole lot like preppy culture. She searched high and low for great and famous writers to take it on. When she couldn't find one, she found me and offered me a fat check to write this book. What the hell, I figured, all my baggie-pants buddies had a sense of humor, right? Well, as it turns out, humor is all about timing. Though The Snowboarders' Total Guide To Life sold well and many thought it was pretty funny, there were also those who were not quite ready for a tongue-in-cheek, baggie-pants bashing. At the time I was also writing for a snowboard magazine. When the galleys reached my editor there, he sent me the following one-line email: "Your services are no longer needed." Like I said, humor is all about timing. -
Pro SkierWorld Pro Mogul Tour Nov 1985 - Apr 1996During the decade that I lived in Vail, Colorado, I made my living competing on different professional mogul skiing tours that continually changed their name due to different sponsorship deals (The World Pro Mogul Tour, The Bud Tour, The Coors Light Tour, The Dos Equis Pro Mogul Tour, The Ford Pro Mogul Tour, etc.). Starting off as a privateer, I formed a team and sold a multi-year sponsorship to PowerBar. As Captain of The PowerBar Pro Mogul Team I negotiated all of our sponsorship deals, booked coaching clinics, and kept the team working together.
