Bill Keyes served on the UNION BANK (UBNC) BOARD OF DIRECTORS from 2020 until its sale to FNB Corp. in 2022. He served on the Audit, Loan, Asset/Liability, and Community Reinvestment Act Committees.Dr. Keyes also served on the UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA BOARD OF TRUSTEES from 2015 to 2019. He held the positions of Secretary, chairman of the External Relations Committee, vice chairman of the University Affairs Committee, and member of the Personnel Committee. He also established and led a working group committed to improving success rates for African American male students.Prior to his appointment to the UNC Board of Trustees, Keyes served on the Board of Visitors (2006-2010), the Graduate Education Advancement Board (2009-2010), the Board of Advisors of the School of Media and Journalism (2002-2022), the Board of Directors of the Media and Journalism Foundation (2011-2015, 2020-2024), and the Advisory Board of the Leadership Institute, which he helped to create (2006-2012). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Study Center and the Advisory Board of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities. In 2024, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of UNC HEALTH. In 2018, Keyes earned a PHD in COMMUNICATION STUDIES, with a special focus on rhetorical criticism, becoming the only person in UNC's history to earn a PhD while serving on the Board of Trustees.He was tapped for the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Frank Porter Graham Honor Society. He received the Harvey Beech Award at the Black Alumni Reunion in 2018 and the Distinguished Service Media from UNC’s General Alumni Association in 2022. Later in 2022, he received the William Richardson David Award from the Board of Trustees.Keyes’ most important work is his direction of the INSTITUTE FOR RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP, which he established in 2001. The Institute serves some of America’s best and brightest African American male college students. Institute alumni have become Rhodes Scholars, Fulbright Scholars, and the recipients of many other honors and awards. They have earned PhD's, MD's, JD's, MBA's, MA's and other degrees.
