Working with a strong team of economic and other analysts to devise policy responses for major UK retailers to emerging issues around trade policy in Europe and internationally, with a particular focus on Brexit. Advised some of the UK’s largest companies on the legal, political, regulatory and economic implications of the Brexit process including analysis of scenarios and advice on mitigating exposure to risk and Brexit preparedness. Involved engagement at official and senior political level in Whitehall, Westminster, Dublin, and Brussels. Secured agreed goals through media, Parliamentary, and UK Government ministerial and official-level engagement such as on upfront import VAT policy concession by HM Treasury in the event of a no deal Brexit scenario.

Advised corporate clients on developing policies, legislation and regulatory standards and responses across the financial services sector, with particular reference to the emerging fintech sector, plus the banking and investment sectors, based on developments at EU, US, Canada, and global levels. Also instituted the Brexit Advisory Unit producing research papers, analysis pieces and documents on specific regulatory instruments, and other advice for corporates and other enterprises on issues around the UK’s new relationships with the EU, and the transition from EU membership. Advised range of clients on implications of Brexit for sectoral economic and regulatory interests. Spoke at major Conferences in London in autumn 2016 on the impact of Brexit on financial services and globalisation.

Contributor to several roundtable panels on energy market reform for IPPR, and the future of the banking sector for The CityUK.

Member of frontbench team on Scotland following Holyrood 2011 elections and through first half of Scottish Referendum campaign preparations. Paid particular focus on macroeconomic issues around the Referendum, including currency, EU, and fiscal policy. Worked on paper on tax powers to be devolved following Referendum, and issues around Scottish economy such as business investment, increasing productivity, and effects of low pay on growth and inequality. Forged strong links with policy community, such as the IPPR, on the debate on further powers to be devolved to the Scottish Parliament.

Dealt with policy on fisheries, farming, food, and animal welfare in the shadow Defra team, focusing on issue of fish discards and sustainable fisheries, implementation of the Foresight report on increasing productivity in food supply chains, and effects of climate change reduction on sustainable food production. Authored several articles and a book chapter on impact of food on increasing UK exports. Also developed interest in commodity pricing and proper regulation of trading markets. Spoke at several conferences and meetings organised by the NFU, and consulted with stakeholders frequently in Westminster and in Brussels.
