My present research includes strategic management of research organizations, international legal aspects of cyber-security, ultra-short pulse X-ray sources, free electron laser physics, high intensity cyclotrons, high-energy proton colliders, and applications of ion beams to nanotechnology.Previously, as Director of the US Particle Accelerator School (USPAS), my responsibilities included overall management of the USPAS, a national graduate school in accelerator technology. I was responsible for curriculum development and course selection, for selecting USAPS faculty, negotiating with credit-granting host universities, and developing the student base for the School. As Director, Accelerator and Fusion Research Division, LBNL (1993 – 2006)I managed a large and diverse research program in accelerator and beam physics and in fusion technology. (≈30-70 M$ per year depending on projects). My division provided accelerator physics support to the Advanced Light Source. I oversaw 4 major construction projects of the division. I also participated in formulating research policy & long-range direction for the entire Laboratory.My book, Strategic Management of Research Organizations is now in press with Taylor & Francis. I have edited four books about accelerator science, co-authored four books concerning cybersecurity, privacy and international cyber-law, including, “Averting Disaster: Science for Peace in a Perilous Age” and “The Quest for Cyber Peace,” published by the International Telecommunications Union. I hold four patents and have published ~90 scientific papers plus 30 reports on strategic technologies. I have organized numerous international schools in accelerator technologies, including Innovative Technologies for Cleaning the Environment. I hold a Ph.D. (Physics) from the University of Chicago, and am a fellow of the APS and a Foreign Member of the Academy of Science of the Bologna Institute (Italy).
