Bill Becker is the founder and executive director of the Presidential Climate Action Project, a nonpartisan initiative that works with national and international thought leaders to develop climate and energy policy recommendations for the President of the United States, Congress, and candidates for national office. He is a former senior official at the U.S. Department of Energy, where he specialized in renewable energy. He is also an expert on global climate change and national disaster policy, particularly regarding floods. At DOE, he created the Center of Excellence for Sustainable Development, which sent expert teams into communities to help them plan their recoveries from major floods, ranging from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans to the Christmas tsunami in Thailand. In the 1970s, he was instrumental in the pioneering relocation of Soldiers Grove, WI, from its floodplain and its reconstruction as the nation's first solar-heated village.Becker's books include "The 100-Day Action Plan to Save the Planet," published by St. Martin's Griffin, and "The Creeks Will Rise: People Coexisting with Floods," published by the Chicago Review Press. He was co-editor and a contributor to "Democracy Unchained: How to Rebuild Government for the People," published by New Press. He has written several manuals on relocating disaster-prone communities and creating solar villages. He is a prolific blogger, formerly on Huffington Post and now on his own website.Bill began his career as a combat correspondent for the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He subsequently wrote for the Associated Press and the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, WI. He published and edited his own weekly newspaper in rural Wisconsin. During his eclectic career, he has served as executive assistant to the Attorney General of Wisconsin, research director in the Wisconsin Legislature, Counselor to the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, and special assistant to and regional director for the Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy. Bill was recently honored by Who's Who in America, which publishes the biographical records of "individuals who possess professional integrity, demonstrate outstanding achievement in their respective fields, and have made innumerable contributions to society as a whole."Becker, 76, lives with his wife, Mary, in Waunakee, WI.
