My Asian-American story is not the usual story of a 1st/2nd Generation immigrant or of an exchange student.My parents are full-blooded Americans: born and raised. If I hadn't spent the first 18 months of my life in Korea, I'd be proud to say the same. The truth is, I am the result of years of hard work and financial sacrifice in the name of child adoption. This is really where my story begins.I grew up in the hilly NJ suburbs among typical American Nuclear Families. There were only a handful of kids that looked like me, but I never felt out of place. Being the only Asian kid in a school, there weren't many assumptions people could make about me based on my ethnicity.But at a school like Rutgers New Brunswick, there are probably thousands of Asian and Asian-American students. For the first time in my life, I wasn't the only Asian in the classroom. Suddenly everybody thought they knew me. "I posted the assignment online for the exchange students...""Your English is really good!""Oh, you know - Asian parents...""안녕하세요!“My parents taught me that your first impression is one of the most important interactions you can have with someone. I worked very hard on the way that I present myself to people who know nothing about me. But since I've left my hometown, people that I meet think they know me already - I don't get to give my first impression. Lately my first impressions are wasted trying to reverse pre-conceptions, but often there just isn't enough time.
