William retired in October of 2019. He is currently blending world travel with consulting on best practices and policy in law enforcement. Chief William Bones began his law enforcement career with the Boise Police Department (BPD) in 1992 rising through the ranks to become the Boise Chief of Police on January 29, 2015. In addition to serving the population of the Idaho state capitol BPD also provides services to the regional airport and Boise State University. Chief Bones is a recognized leader who works to consistently improve police services, employing innovative approaches and creating partnerships to better serve Boise. He believes the foundation of successful policing is to create engagement among community members working together with police in creating a more livable community. Be it liaison officers working with our LGBT, Latino or refugee populations, a department mascot doing walking the streets or a police mental health coordinator working to get those in need help he works to create agile problem solving solutions in concert with the community. Chief Bones has worked to achieve a vision of collaborative policing with community members working in partnership with its police department to create a safer environment for every member of the community regardless of race, gender identity, religion or social status. Chief Bones has a Bachelor of Science from Excelsior College, New York. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session 236 and the School of Police Staff and Command of Northwestern University, Illinois. He is a board member for Pathways, serves on the Treasure Valley Housing and Homeless Council and was the 2017 recipient of the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights leadership award.
