On contract with Uber. Responsible for delivering global driver navigation data used by the Uber driver app world-wide. This data is built from source GDF into a highly processed binary format. This process is a complex multi-step massive scale transformation process using a combination of programs written in C, Perl, Python, Bash, and Java Map / Reduce. The transformation process is managed by a system I created that allows me to describe and control the process in a graph displayed in a web browser and control execution of the process on a cluster running Hadoop in AWS.

DeCarta was a key player in the exploding field of location based services and highly processed cartographic data providing API's (Android, IOS, JavaScript) and Hosted Web Servides for general GPS navigation, map display and POI search.I directed the content engineering group where we developed the tools and processes to convert various forms of world-wide map data from TomTom, Nokia, OpenStreetMap, and many others into a highly processed and enhanced binary format that powers all the LBS services.Faced with a tedious time consuming and error prone manual build process. I developed a system for building map data based on my experience with graphical data flow ideas. I created a web based graphical data flow model to simplify the creation and management of the complex data processing required for map data. I built this on top of a Hadoop cluster, but created my own task execution-management layer, which unlike Hadoop monitors cluster resources and loads tasks appropriately. I built this in Python on top of Postgress and created my own ORM to enable reliable multi-thread concurrent task scheduling. The system supports mixing any kind of processing into the graph, Hadoop map/reduce nodes are integrated into nodes running Perl, Python, Bash, C and C++ and is fully transactional to allow start and stop at any point in the graph. This system allowed me to fully automate the entire processing chain of map data, which previously required a team in India and China and US and eliminated human error in this process.

Senior software designer and developer for a high performance distributed intelligent sensor network utilizing embedded Linux edge devices communicating with one or more central data concentrators for high volume RFID data streams. Multithreaded C++, and STL core design on Linux. Designed and implemented the network layer, data stream layer, and embedded edge device manager in both x86 and ARM-9 architectures. Developed custom Linux device drivers for the edge device sensors, custom tool chains, USB drivers, and WIFI-WPA implementations. Responsible for customer / engineering interface, installation support and team direction. Also designed and implemented the company wide software configuration management and build system procedures and tools based on Subversion (SVN) and CruiseControl.

MBARI is a world class Oceanographic Research Institute that operates 3 ships and underwater vehicles both tethered and autonomous. The institute combines state of the art electrical ,mechanical, and software engineering with scientific research goals. It is privately funded from the Packard Foundation. My role there was to build a new IT infrastructure and staff an IT support group with the goal of establishing a solid IT foundation for years to come. I created a solid group of 5 IT pros, built a new network infrastructure, and server infrastructure, established IT support policies, IT purchase policies, and had a great time immersed in some amazing science.

Schlumberger at the time was a key player in providing equipment for testing high speed, high pin count devices. The software environment used for developing test programs was primarily procedural and required a lot of time to develop. My role there was to bring a new graphical technology to bear on the problem, to provide a more visual and interactive environment for test program development and debug. In combination with numerous engineers there we developed a data driven model for driving the test hardware and I then developed a graphical UI that displayed the test steps in a DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) and allowed all test parameters to be accessed through this UI. This approach soon became the industry standard and Schlumberger had the flagship product.
